Snowshoeing!

Love to walk?  No reason to stop in the winter.  In fact if you like to hike, SNOWSHOEING is a great way to enjoy the special beauty of the season. Snowshoeing is one of the fastest growing winter sports in North America. It's easy to do and a great form of exercise. If you can walk on the sidewalk you can snowshoe!

The history of the snowshoe is a history of necessity. The snowshoe was an indispensable mode of winter transportation for native peoples from Labrador to the Great Plains. Hunting over snow laden terrains was made possible wearing these unique shoes.

Recreational use began about the  turn of the century. The simplicity of snowshoeing can make the sport immediately enjoyable for all ages. The slower pace allows for a perfect opportunity to truly appreciate the wonders of nature in wintertime, which we may often miss.

Our environmental education director, Vicki Doeden, will offer two opportunities to join her on Sunday, January 8th. Families are encouraged to sign up for the 1:30 - 4pm session. * Children should be 8 yrs or older; younger ones may follow along. Then in the evening when the Full Moon rises another hike will begin at 6:30. Both sessions will be at Garvin County Park and are dependent on an adequate snowfall.

Advance registration is necessary a minimum of 5 days in advance.  Fee: $6. includes snowshoes.

* Also offering CROSS COUNTRY SKIING session on Sat. January 7th. See www. shetek.org for more info.

** Groups are encouraged to contact Vicki for other dates this winter
